As part of the collaboration between FAO and the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC), the EAF NANSEN Programme and the Permanent Secretariat of the SRFC are jointly organizing a training workshop on the management of shared stocks of Sardinelles in Northwest Africa, at the SRFC premises in Dakar, on 29 and 30 November 2023.

This workshop was attended by about thirty participants from the four countries of the sub-region, namely: Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia and Guinea Bissau. Representatives from the Fisheries Administration, research and the private sector worked together for two consecutive days on the history of the management of shared sardinella stocks in the North West African region. This meeting also allowed the participants to agree and define orientations and a common vision in order to coordinate and harmonize the management of this fishery in the four countries

The objectives of this workshop were to:

1. Learn from each other's experiences and knowledge about the history of shared stock management in the SRFC/NWA region (both cooperatively and undertaken by each country);

2. Analyze, together, existing regional cooperation networks (e.g., resource and information sharing) in the management of shared stocks and identify obstacles and opportunities for better cooperation;

3. Develop the vision for Sardinella shared stock management in 2035, applying the ideas and concepts of the training program.

The training was followed by a one-day working session on regional activities related to the Shared Sardinella Initiative of the EAF Nansen programme to discuss results and lessons learned
